Magic loaf through Memphis and earn a loss
The Magic completely fell apart in Memphis on Monday night and were defeated by the Grizzlies by a score of 100-97. Below are the top three reasons why they lost (I chose not to go with the top 15… which could have easily been done):
- The Magic guards play NO D: Mike Conley put up 26 points and dished 11 assists against the sagging defense of Gilbert Arenas and Jameer Nelson. The guards, to include Jason Richardson, were out of position so often that the Grizzlies were able to get open shots at will and knocked them down. (to be fair, everyone on the team not named Dwight Howard was worthless on D. Honestly, it looked like an under-8 AAU team running around with Dwight in the middle.)
- Composure: Or lack thereof. 17 turnovers and two technical fouls, including a tech on Dwight with 6 seconds left in the game.
- Shot selection: Memphis played a swarming zone and the Magic tried their best to keep shooting off balanced and bad three pointers. Overall in the game, the Magic attempted 32 three’s and converted on only 8 of them. Settling.
”We’re not ready to contend,” Van Gundy said afterward. “We don’t defend hard enough for long enough, and we’re going to see if over the next 10? weeks now if it’ll change.
