Gilbert Arenas has been fined for his Twitter remarks. Meanwhile, somewhere David Stern is punching a puppy.
The @agentzeroshow is already in serious damage of being short lived. Zach McCann of the Orlando Sentinel reported today that Gil has indeed been fined by the league. Gilbert previously had touched on the fines via the same medium that got him fined, Twitter.
My first reaction to this whole fine is to channel my inner Seth Myers and shout out. “REALLY”… and the more I think about it, the more I think it’s crazy. This is the most entertainment that NBA fans have gotten from Gil in YEARS. A truly refreshing break from NBA players tweeting boring, mundane garbage. Gil’s non-sense is just that, non-sense. It is not supposed to be taken seriously, just meant for entertainment.
I stood next to Gilbert in the Magic locker room, with a few other members of the media, shortly after Arenas came to Orlando and listened to him voice his disdain on how people/media/NBA execs cant understand that Gilbert Arenas the person is different from Gilbert Arenas the entertainer. This conversation was with no recorders or cameras in his face, it was just Gil being Gil. At that time, he thought he would never blog or be on Twitter again for that simple reason. People couldn’t separate it.
There is no secret that we treat athletes differently than we treat any other form of entertainment. We want our favorite players to run fast, jump high, hit hard and do it with class/spunk/swag but we DON’T want them to speak.
The Hibachi is smarter than you all think. He will always have a large part of his personality inked with immaturity, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have a lot of things figured out. Twitter gives him a chance to win his fans back. He can entertain and joke and give shoes away every day. Slowly as time goes by, those same Orlando and NBA fans that were screaming at him for being a step slower start to forgive.
Gil talks to them, he makes them laugh and does it all with a sense of quirkiness that makes fans think they truly know him. Well, that is until he is inevitably shut down by the Angel of Stern and his cronies (its a joke, I love you Mr. Stern). It’s only a matter of time before Gil the Entertainer says something that doesn’t agree with what Gil the Baller is supposed to say. When that comes, so will the pressure to shut down.
In the meantime, continue to enjoy the @agentzeroshow and remember that the entire reason any of us watch sports in the first place, is to be entertained. Keep spewing non-sense Gil and keep being that “man of the people” that is endearing to those watching. Yes, you’ll get shut down at some point…but you will have done it YOUR way. Gilbert Sinatra.
